Aletsch Glacier Winter Hike
Description
This 13 km winter trail through the Aletsch Arena is truly magical. You’ll discover the Aletsch Glacier covered in snow, walk through three different mountain villages, and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
For those who don’t know, winter hiking is an activity that allows you to hike on the snow on some paths that have been prepared for this purpose. You can do it with just a pair of good hiking shoes. Before going on these hikes, make sure the route is open.
This is starting in the upper station of Moosfluh. From there, you can already see the Aletsch Glacier. On a clear day, you can also spot the Matterhorn on the other side of the valley. You can now start walking towards Rieder Furka, following the prepared path. Follow the pink signage. Just be careful; some sections are steep, and you might slip. I would recommend having hiking poles to help you.
When you reach the Rieder Furka, you will keep going down to the Riederalp village. From there, the path is flat and easier to walk on. After a few kilometers, you will reach Bettmeralp, a picturesque village with its wooden houses and its small chapel.
The last section goes to the Fiescheralp mountain station. You will walk through some forest and white plains with no vegetation. You will finally reach the end of the hike.
Logistics
To get to the trailhead, you should first take the train to
Mörel. Then cross the road to access the gondola/cable car station. From there, you can take the lift up to
Riederalp West. From there, you will have to walk to the chairlift station
Riederalp (Moosfluh). Ride the lift up to
Moosfluh.
The return trip is less complicated. You will arrive at
Fiescheralp. Take the lift down to
Fiesch. From there, you can take the train back to Mörel or continue to your destination.
