Aletsch Glacier and Ice Cave

Description

This hike offers some of the best views of the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. The most adventurous of you can also get closer to the glacier and admire the ice cave (from the outside).

The hike begins in Fiescheralp with a steady climb. After reaching the top, you will be able to see the Aletsch Glacier in the distance. From here, the glacier stays in sight as you continue towards the Märjelensee lake.

After the temporary trail, you will have the opportunity to turn left and descend towards the ice cave. Be careful: some sections are slippery, and the path becomes hard to follow near the end. Your effort will be rewarded with impressive ice formations, glowing in different shades of blue. Do not enter the ice cave since it is not safe.

After taking a break at the ice cave, you will be going up again and reach the Märjelensee lake. Keep walking towards the Gletscherstube, a tunnel that goes through the mountain. At the end of the tunnel, on the left, you will be able to see the tongue of the Fieschergletscher. After a few more kilometers, you will finally reach the Fiescheralp station.
